Fellow high school golfers weren’t the only opponents at the Division I North Region boys golf championship at Red Hawk’s Lakes Course on Monday and Tuesday.

Miners finished 1-2-3 — Harrison Holetz as the medalist at 3-over-par 147, followed by Jens Verhey and first-day leader Nick Turner at 149— as the tournament went to a shotgun start for the first time in at least 10 years. Verhey finished second by way of a scorecard tiebreaker.
Manogue didn’t put up the gaudy numbers it did a year ago at Dayton Valley, when it set a regional record with a 25-over-par 745 in winning by 65 strokes, but it still lapped the competition.

“The kids did it,” said Manogue coach Chris Trevino, who also runs Trevino Golf Institute. “They know how to play, and even though the conditions were bad, they kept the double bogeys off the card and found a way to get the ball in the hole.”
Manogue and Reno will represent the Division I North Region in the NIAA Division I state tournament at Sierra Sage next Tuesday and Wednesday.

Holetz was three shots behind Turner after Monday’s first round. He started the second round Tuesday on the 11th hole and opened his round with six birdies in his first 12 holes to move into the lead. There were only three sub-par rounds in the tournament (Verhey’s 71 in the second round).
“It’s great,” Holetz said of winning. “Playing alongside Nick is always a pleasure. He’s a great kid. I always want the best for him. I was just going to go out there and play for myself and not worry about what anyone else is shooting. ... I ended up shooting a good score. It always feels good to win.”
Holetz said the weather played in his favor.
“The rain makes the greens a lot softer and the fairways a lot softer, so you can go over the bunkers and attack the pins,” he said. “I always feel like I can play good in the rain. I fee like I can keep my composure and hit some good shots.”
Trevino wasn’t surprised to see him play well, either.
“He’s been trending in the right direction for a while,” Trevino said. “He’s starting to make some birdies and even some eagles. I expect big things out of him, and I know he’s going to do well.”
The Division I North (formerly Northern 4A) will be looking for its first state title since Spanish Springs won in 2009.
“We’re a great team and we’re only going to get better with experience,” Holetz said. “... Sierra Sage is a short course. It’s very getable. We’ve played it a lot. That gives us quite an advantage. We have a very good chance of pulling it out next week.”
