Bruce Pollock was just one of thousands of people who lined Arendell Street Saturday morning to watch the 17th annual Carteret County Veterans Day Parade, but he stood out in the crowd.

Mr. Pollock sat in his wheelchair proudly wearing a Marine Corps hat and jacket, waving a small flag and tooting an air horn at different groups that passed by in the parade.

The processional lasted two hours and featured at least 2,040 people, according to Hank Gotard, County Veterans Services Officer. “This is a great day,” said Mr. Gotard, as he watched the early stages of the parade. He was pleased with the turnout of people participating in the parade, and of those watching from either side of Arendell Street.

The annual parade honors all the men and women who have served our nation in all branches of the military. Although it is designated as an official regional parade that featured groups from all over Eastern North Carolina, it is believed to be the largest parade of its kind in the state. While Memorial Day is to honor those who lost their lives fighting for our nation, Veterans Day is to honor those who are still alive.

Mr. Pollock served in the U.S. Marine Corps from 1960- 1982. He has lived in Morehead City for 63 years now, and said that every year he enjoys this day. “This is all about honoring our vets,” he said. “It is thanking them for our service, it is about God and country.”

Mr. Pollock's father was also in the Marine Corps and was stationed in the area. “When they went to move on to the next place, I liked it so much here that I stayed behind,” said Mr. Pollock.

The parade began with two Morehead City policemen on motorcycles, followed by the 2nd Marine Corps Aircraft Wing Band.

Throughout the parade, all five branches of the military were honored and represented. Three area high school bands played, as well as the Havelock Community Band. Numerous Cub Scouts, Brownies, Boy Scout and Girl Scout troops trailed behind on boats, small trailers or walking in a group.

Women's veterans groups, Korea War veterans, World War II veterans and more all had special recognition throughout the event that saw a wide variety of participants.
