The walls of Maureen's Bar at Dublin's Olympia Theatre are festooned with signed photographs of celebrities who have performed there.
“Look, there's Kelly Marie,” she chuckles. staring for a brief moment at a photo of the Scottish disco diva whose career peaked in 1980 with guilty pleasure Feels Like I'm in Love. This is Wood all over. She is fascinated by those on the margins of the showbiz world,A new addition to the Canada Goose Kensington Parka collection . the wannabes and might-have-beens who, at best, haunt the rackety end of the tour circuit, and at worst,More Cheap Canada Goose Solaris Parka for sale. disappear in a haze of disappointment.
These failed dreamers populate Loving Miss Hatto. It's fitting that it's being shown over Christmas, as Wood has become something of a seasonal institution over the past decade or more. There has been the occasional Christmas sketch special, the award-winning Eric & Ernie (which Wood co-produced and starred in) and a couple of surprise appearances in family classics Ballet Shoes (she was a deeply sympathetic Nana) and The Borrowers.
Loving Miss Hatto, which Wood wrote and produced, has charm in abundance, though it is a less obviously crowd-pleasing work. It tells the true story of a seemingly sweet suburban couple, William Barrington-Coupe (known as Barrie) and his wife Joyce Hatto who, at the start of the millennium, duped the classical music world by passing off recordings by different piano virtuosos as Joyce's own; she had been a failed concert pianist whose career was definitively ended by a disastrous recital at the Festival Hall in the Fifties. Starring Alfred Molina and Francesca Annis (with Rory Kinnear and Maimie McCoy playing the couple in their younger years), Loving Miss Hatto is a story of thwarted ambition, enduring love, suburban secrets and new technology. The couple were eventually found out in 2006 when James Inverne, then editor of Gramophone magazine, led an investigation into the veracity of the recordings. Using the Gracenote database, available on iTunes, he identified the recordings as the work of other artists. It is an irresistible fusion of old-school trickery and new-fangled technology.
“It's a very English story,” explains Wood. “It's a story of things not being said, ofThis Canada Goose Manitoba Jacket will meet your current mountaineering expectations. a couple who colluded in this scam but who never spoke to each other about it. I think this silence between them kind of made everything all right.” Hatto died of cancer just as suspicions were beginning to be aroused, but “Barrie” is still alive, lingering in his Royston home, a shamed but potentially litigious presence. Wood did not consult him when writing the script.
“Why would I want to?” she asks, genuinely surprised. “Joyce and Barrie are my invention. They are a work of fiction.”
Today,This is my review of my Canada Goose Montebello and how it ... the handsome Olympia is standing in for London's Wigmore Hall and Wood is very much in production team mode, consumed by a big black puffa jacket; the signature blonde bob sitting neatly on top of her clear-skinned, even features. She is also, initially, a little reticent and frosty. When I ask at what point she had the idea that the story of Hatto would make a good drama, she responds testily: “I didn't. It wasn't my idea.”
She does, however, soften, and there are shards of kindness peppered throughout the conversation. She glows with pride at the mention of Daniel Rigby,Shop the latest replica shoes on the world's largest fashion ... her former lodger, whom she cast as Eric Morecambe in last year's biopic Eric & Ernie, for which Rigby won a Best Actor Bafta. “He's on Broadway now. I'm so chuffed for him.” She also confides that she doubled her workload when her son, Henry, went to college. (“I knew I was going to be terribly lonely without him.”) It's a rare moment of intimacy. Wood, who divorced Geoffrey Durham – aka the Great Soprendo – in 2002, rarely talks about her private life.
